What is a file shelf on Mac?
A file shelf is a temporary place to hold an item while you switch to its destination. It is useful when the source and destination are in different apps or Spaces. For one simple move, Finder and macOS drag and drop are often enough. A shelf becomes valuable when the handoff takes several steps and you want the file to remain easy to reach.

Try the Mac tools already available.
Drag a file from Finder into another window, an email draft or a compatible app. Apple’s drag-and-drop guide explains that holding Option while dragging copies an item instead of moving it. Check the destination before releasing the file so you know which action you are taking.
If windows are the real problem, arrange Finder and the destination side by side. Stage Manager can group the windows you use together; Apple’s Stage Manager guide shows how to organize app groups. A dedicated shelf is most helpful when your destination is not ready yet or you change workspaces before dropping the item.
03 / A REPEATABLE HANDOFF
Park the file, complete the task, then clear it.
- Choose the item deliberately. Drag only the file you are moving into the temporary shelf.
- Switch to the destination. Open the document, message or app where the item belongs.
- Retrieve and verify. Drag the shelf item into the destination and confirm the destination received the intended file.
- Remove the temporary item. Clear it from the shelf after the handoff.

Understand what happens to the original.
Fide Island stores a temporary local copy of files you intentionally select or drop. Removing an item from its shelf removes the managed copy; it does not delete the original source file. The design expires shelf copies after 24 hours. That makes the shelf a handoff tool, not a backup or long-term archive.
Open the destination and confirm the file arrived. Keep the original in Finder until you are sure the handoff is complete.
Fide Island’s data and permissions page says the flow uses user-selected files and does not request Full Disk Access. Its privacy policy explains local retention.

When does a temporary shelf help?
Use Finder for a straightforward move or when you need a permanent folder structure. Use a shelf when you repeatedly collect a few files from different places before attaching, sending or importing them. If your workflow involves sensitive material, clear the managed copy promptly and avoid treating any temporary shelf as a secure vault.
